The first steps after a crash

Start with immediate safety. Once the scene is safe, focus on documenting what happened and organizing the information you will need.

RESOURCE GUIDE · FIRST EDITION

Make safety the first priority

If there is immediate danger or someone needs urgent help, call 911. Follow instructions from emergency responders. Do not put yourself at risk to photograph the scene.

Collect the essential details

When it is safe, record the other driver’s name, contact details, insurance information, license plate, and vehicle description. Ask for the responding agency and report number. Note the time, road, direction of travel, and witness contact details.

Preserve your records

Keep original photos, dashcam files, messages, receipts, and correspondence. Back up original files without editing them. Use the checklist to track the items you still need.
