STATES & DISTRICTS / OREGON / PORTLAND

Use this Portland guide to find the correct crash-report request, understand local data coverage, and reach official traffic resources. Start with the investigating agency and report number on your paperwork.

Check whether you received an exchange form or a police report

Portland Police directs involved drivers to its Records Division when an officer wrote a collision report. If you were given a Traffic Crash Exchange Report, the Traffic Division says that may be the only record written.

The department advises waiting at least 72 hours before contacting Records for an assigned case number in that situation. That is an inquiry interval, not a guaranteed processing time. A police report and a motorist’s separate Oregon DMV report are different documents; keep proof of each submission with your records.

LOCAL RESOURCE CONTEXT

Portland and ODOT use different sources for crash analysis

Portland explains that Oregon’s official crash record combines motorist self-reports and police investigations, while the city obtains deadly-crash information directly from Portland Police. Those sources can differ in timing and completeness. Read the dashboard notes before comparing years or treating a count as complete; neither is a live road-clearance service.

Oregon TripCheck provides regional travel information. Select the relevant roadway, direction, and event category and check the source’s own update time. Coverage may include construction, hazards, and incidents outside city limits; it is not a complete record of all local crashes.

Keep a useful record for follow-up

  • Save the investigating agency, report number, date, and precise road or intersection.
  • Retain your request confirmation and a dated copy of any report received.
  • Keep original photos, repair estimates, and towing or rental receipts together.
  • List missing documents or corrections for the records office separately from insurance questions.
