How to find your crash report

A traffic alert, a news article, and a police crash report are different records. For an official report, start with the agency that investigated your crash.

RESOURCE GUIDE · FIRST EDITION

Identify the investigating agency

Check any paperwork provided at the scene. The report may be held by a police department, sheriff, highway patrol, or a statewide records system. Have the crash date, location, and report number ready.

Use the official request process

Eligibility, fees, and availability vary. Do not assume that a newly reported crash already has a completed report. If the record is missing, contact the agency to ask about its processing time.

Texas reports

TxDOT provides an official purchase system for Texas Peace Officer’s Crash Reports. Follow the agency’s eligibility and identification instructions.
