Understand a total-loss offer

Before comparing an insurance offer to online vehicle values, understand what the offer includes and which vehicle details were used.

RESOURCE GUIDE · FIRST EDITION

Request the valuation report

Ask for the written valuation, comparable vehicles, condition adjustments, mileage, trim, and equipment details. Check for factual errors and keep the supporting records.

Compare like with like

A trade-in value, private-party estimate, dealer asking price, and insurance valuation are different measures. Use vehicles with similar location, mileage, trim, and condition when gathering comparisons.

Separate the vehicle value from your loan

The amount owed on a loan is a separate number. Review your policy and loan documents, and ask the insurer to explain any deductible or other adjustment in writing. The worksheet helps organize your figures; it does not determine what an insurer owes.
