STATES & DISTRICTS / CALIFORNIA / SAN DIEGO

Use this San Diego guide to find the correct crash-report request, understand local data coverage, and reach official traffic resources. Start with the investigating agency and report number on your paperwork.

Use SDPD’s collision-report route

San Diego Police separates collision-report requests from other police records. Its official instructions offer online ordering through LexisNexis and mail or in-person alternatives. The department asks users to allow three to ten business days for submission and review before requesting a copy; this is not a guarantee that every report will be ready.

Keep the SDPD incident number, collision date, street location, and involved-party information. If CHP investigated a freeway collision, start with CHP rather than assuming the SDPD portal will contain it. A purchase retrieves an existing record; it does not file a new collision report.

LOCAL RESOURCE CONTEXT

What San Diego’s daily collision data excludes

The city’s collision dataset is updated daily and identifies records by report number, with locations reduced to blocks. Its coverage generally excludes property-damage-only crashes unless hit-and-run or DUI is involved, and freeway crashes handled by CHP. Those exclusions matter when comparing streets: a missing record is not proof that a collision did not occur. This dataset is historical reporting, not current road status.

Caltrans QuickMap provides regional travel information. Select the relevant roadway, direction, and event category and check the source’s own update time. Coverage may include construction, hazards, and incidents outside city limits; it is not a complete record of all local crashes.

Keep a useful record for follow-up

  • Save the investigating agency, report number, date, and precise road or intersection.
  • Retain your request confirmation and a dated copy of any report received.
  • Keep original photos, repair estimates, and towing or rental receipts together.
  • List missing documents or corrections for the records office separately from insurance questions.
