STATES & DISTRICTS / MASSACHUSETTS / BOSTON

Use this Boston guide to find the correct crash-report request, understand local data coverage, and reach official traffic resources. Start with the investigating agency and report number on your paperwork.

Request a police report directly from Boston Police

Boston Police’s report-copy instructions describe email and in-person requests. An email request identifies the incident date, location, and involved people, with identification for verification. In-person applicants use the Public Service Unit at headquarters and bring valid photo identification.

Read the official instructions before sending personal documents and provide them directly to the department, not to Accident Advisory. Keep the investigating agency and case number. A collision in the Boston metropolitan area is not necessarily a Boston Police investigation, especially when another municipality or state agency responded.

LOCAL RESOURCE CONTEXT

Boston Vision Zero data does not count every property-damage crash

Boston’s Vision Zero crash information concerns incidents requiring a public-safety response that may involve injuries or fatalities. It should not be read as a complete inventory of all property-damage collisions. City data and wider regional transportation studies also have different boundaries. Use the map’s reporting dates and methodology when comparing locations.

Official traffic resources: Boston area

Massachusetts traffic and travel information provides regional travel information. Select the relevant roadway, direction, and event category and check the source’s own update time. Coverage may include construction, hazards, and incidents outside city limits; it is not a complete record of all local crashes.

Keep a useful record for follow-up

  • Save the investigating agency, report number, date, and precise road or intersection.
  • Retain your request confirmation and a dated copy of any report received.
  • Keep original photos, repair estimates, and towing or rental receipts together.
  • List missing documents or corrections for the records office separately from insurance questions.
