STATES & DISTRICTS / NORTH CAROLINA / CHARLOTTE

Use this Charlotte guide to find the correct crash-report request, understand local data coverage, and reach official traffic resources. Start with the investigating agency and report number on your paperwork.

Use CMPD’s crash-report instructions

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police distinguishes crash reports from crime and general incident reports. Its instructions describe access for involved drivers, passengers, and registered owners. Online copies and counter copies can have different costs, so check the current official guidance before choosing a route.

A calls-for-service record is not the same as the completed crash report. Keep the report number, date, and investigating agency on your paperwork; another Mecklenburg County municipality or the Highway Patrol may have handled the collision. Ordering a record does not create a new report.

LOCAL RESOURCE CONTEXT

Charlotte’s traffic list is a dispatch snapshot

CMPD’s traffic-information page shows accidents and roadway obstructions from its 911 dispatch system. The source says it updates every three minutes and removes an event when the officer finishes working it. Categories include more than crashes. Treat entries as preliminary call information, not final injury findings or an assurance that a road is safe when an entry disappears.

DriveNC provides regional travel information. Select the relevant roadway, direction, and event category and check the source’s own update time. Coverage may include construction, hazards, and incidents outside city limits; it is not a complete record of all local crashes.

Keep a useful record for follow-up

  • Save the investigating agency, report number, date, and precise road or intersection.
  • Retain your request confirmation and a dated copy of any report received.
  • Keep original photos, repair estimates, and towing or rental receipts together.
  • List missing documents or corrections for the records office separately from insurance questions.
