STATES / CALIFORNIA / LOS ANGELES

Find the right Los Angeles collision report, distinguish city streets from freeway incident coverage, and explore the city’s road-safety data. Start with the investigating agency on your paperwork rather than assuming every Los Angeles-area crash belongs to LAPD.

LOCAL ROAD SAFETY CONTEXT

Use the High Injury Network to understand street safety

Los Angeles’s Vision Zero resources identify a High Injury Network and priority locations for safety improvements. These maps address patterns of fatal and severe-injury crashes; they are not a live list of collisions.

When reviewing a corridor, check the map’s study period and whether you are viewing city boundaries, priority corridors, or intersections. A historical concentration of crashes does not establish the cause of an individual collision.

Request an LAPD traffic collision report

LAPD provides a dedicated collision-report ordering page with online and mail instructions. Its published guidance asks users to allow at least 45 days before attempting an online request so the report can be reviewed and approved for release. Check the current page for eligibility, exclusions, fees, and required information; this is not a guarantee that a report will be ready on a particular day.

Keep the report number, crash date, location, and involved party information together. A request for a report copy is different from filing a new police report.

If CHP or another department investigated

Check the agency name on the officer’s card. If CHP investigated, use the CHP route in our California guide. A Los Angeles County location may involve another municipal police department or the sheriff rather than LAPD.

Caltrans QuickMap includes CHP incidents, lane closures, and other roadway conditions. Select the layers you need and check the displayed update time. CHP’s incident service is not a complete list of LAPD investigations or local-street crashes.

Keep location details precise

  • Record the freeway number, direction, and nearest exit or cross street.
  • Distinguish a freeway ramp from the adjacent city street.
  • Use the investigating agency’s report number, not only your insurer’s claim number.
  • Save your own photos and documents; a traffic alert may disappear before a report is available.

California rules and recovery tools

Read the California state guide for statewide report routes and general lawsuit periods. Use our evidence guide and vehicle valuation review to prepare your records without relying on an incident listing.
